Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of funding is available?

As noted elsewhere in the Funding section, there is limited funding through Harvard Griffin GSAS and all applicants should apply for outside sources of support (such as Soros, etc.).  The Harvard-Yenching Institute Fellowship is awarded through nomination by the RSEA Admissions Committee and applicants may not apply directly for the Fellowship, nor should they contact faculty members to request consideration for the Fellowship.

What should I submit as a writing sample?

The writing sample must be in English and is limited to 20 pages on letter size paper (not A4), double-spaced utilizing 11-12 point font. The writing sample may be an academic paper you have previously submitted to a class, or as part of your senior thesis. It does not have to focus on your proposed area of research, but it will be beneficial if it does.

I am applying to a Harvard PhD program as well as the RSEA program, can I use the same application?

RSEA is a Master's Degree Program in the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) and has requirements specific to a two-year master's degree. Each application in Harvard Griffin GSAS is separate and you should carefully read the website for additional information (gsas.harvard.edu). You should also indicate on your application for which other Harvard program(s) or school (e.g. Law School) you are applying simultaneously.

Who should I get to write my letters of recommendation? If I send more letters of recommendation is that better for my application?

Letters of recommendation should be written in English and submitted directly by the Recommender as directed in the Harvard Griffin GSAS application.  Only three letters of recommendation should be submitted. Letters from those who know the applicant well academically and the applicant’s qualifications to do graduate study are the most beneficial.
