RSEA is delighted to welcome distinguished alumna Ambassador Julia Chang Bloch (AM’67) during her visit to Harvard. Ambassador Bloch was guest of honor at a luncheon gathering with current RSEA students and faculty on September 26. She shared her recollections of being a student in the RSEA program 50 years ago, and some of the choices and challenges that helped shape her diplomatic career.

Ambassador Julia Chang Bloch is the first Asian American to hold the rank of ambassador in US history, and is now the founding President of the US-China Education Trust. F.Y. Chang, her late father, was the first Boxer Indemnity Scholar to graduate from Harvard Law School one hundred years ago. In honor of him, Ambassador Bloch and her husband Stuart Marshall Bloch established the F.Y. Chang Foundation in 1988, which enabled many talented Chinese legal scholars to study at Harvard Law School.

On September 25 Ambassador Julia Chang Bloch participated in the F.Y. Chang HLS Graduation Centennial Colloquium, one of a series of events designed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Harvard East Asian Legal Studies Program at Harvard Law School, and the 100th anniversary of F.Y. Chang's graduation.

As part of its anniversary celebrations, the East Asian Legal Studies (EALS) Program presents the F.Y. Chang HLS Graduation Centennial Exhibit. The exhibit presents key moments in the life and contributions of Chang Fu-yun (or Zhang Fuyun) as distinguished diplomat, educator, and art collector. The exhibit is on display through the end of October in the Areeda Hall Entrance to the Harvard Law School Library.
